Australian trained, with a subspeciality fellowship  in Breast & Endocrine surgery

Dr Kowsi Murugappan is an Australian trained Breast and Endocrine Surgeon. She obtained her medical degree at Monash University in 2004 and went on to complete her General Surgical training at the Austin Hospital and Monash Health between 2006-2012.

During her surgical training, Dr Kowsi Murugappan developed a strong interest in breast cancer management, which prompted her to pursue a subspeciality fellowship training in Breast and Endocrine surgery. She completed three years of Breast and Endocrine fellowship training at Sydney’s Nepean Hospital, Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane (RBWH). Following completion of her final year of fellowship, she was appointed as a Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon at RBWH, where she served for over a decade, providing high-quality, compassionate care.

Academic work

Actively involved in academic surgery, research & teaching

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Kowsi Murugappan is actively involved in academic surgery. She has led clinical breast cancer research trials, contributed to the University of Queensland medical faculty, and taught junior doctors, registrars, and fellows. She holds a Senior Lecturer title with the University of Queensland and remains committed to advancing research. This involved her leading clinical breast cancer research trials and active involvement with University of Queensland Medical faculty and teaching junior doctors, registrars and fellows. She is also a member of the Breast Cancer Trials (BCT) program.

Dr Kowsi Murugappan is committed to providing the best possible surgical options including breast oncoplastic techniques and implant based reconstructive surgery. She recognises that each patient’s circumstances and diagnosis are unique and she takes the time to develop personalized treatment plans. She ensures her patients understand their options and feel empowered to make informed decisions. She strongly values a multidisciplinary team approach in the management of breast and thyroid conditions to achieve the best possible outcomes.
